How to Turn a Dream into Reality

Turn a Dream into a Reality

As the year winds down, it’s time once again to establish some new years resolutions to start the new year off on the right foot, or is it? Before you commit time and energy to set forth goals for the same old things (e.g. get in better shape, save money, spend more time with family/friends), how about striving for something more important. This year take steps to turn a dream into reality.

Here’s a hint: The first step is to turn a dream into a vision.

Create a Vision

The key to attaining a dream is to think of it in real terms, not wishful thinking. In other words, a dream that has a chance of coming true needs to become a vision. Why? Because a vision resides in the real world, where a dream resides in a fantasy world.

Don’t get me wrong, dreams are extremely important. They are the starting point after all. However, for a dream to become a reality it must be visualized. Think of it this way, people who idle away and never become “successes” are considered “dreamers”. Where wildly successful people are considered “visionaries”. Get the point?

Converting a dream into a vision can be segmented into 3 steps:

  1. Establish a goal
  2. Create a plan
  3. Take action

Once these necessary steps are taken, refined and followed through, dreams can come true, IF you commit to the work needed to be done.

Establish a Goal

As discussed in a previous blog about never giving up, there are important steps to take to never give up. The same is true of turning dreams into realities. The first is to establish a goal by writing it down.

Studies show that the when a goal is written down the likelihood the goals will be attained goes up exponentially. Next, consider formulating a SMART goal which is:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Attainable
  • Relevant
  • Time Based

Create a Plan

Next create a plan. It’s one thing to say what you want and write it down. However, if a plan is not established, the vision will “die on the vine”, so to speak. For example, if you visualize owning your own business, create a plan to raise/save enough capital to get the ball rolling. Next, take action. Talk is cheap after all, actions speak louder than words!

Take Action

This is the key step when turning a dream into reality. Anyone can visualize a dream, establish a goal and create a plan to attain the goal. However, those who realize success take the necessary actions converting an imagined “thing” into a tangible reality. Take our example of raising capital for a new business. The action would be meeting with potential investors and/or financial institutions. Sounds simple, but this is often where a dream dies, and a vision starts to blur.

Follow these steps and finally realize your dreams in the new year. There’s no better time than the present, so take the time to write down your goals, create a plan and take action. The future is yours for the taking, so go out there and get it!
