It should be no surprise, but team building activities for work should be on the top of your to-do list if you are a manager or business owner. Why? Because the best corporate team building activities bring workers together in a fun and relaxing environment with a purpose in mind. Which brings me to the ultimate question: What is your purpose?

As I explained in my post, The Good, Bad and Ugly of Team Building, if your intention is to have a competitive activity, you can actually do more harm than good. And on the other end of the spectrum, employees can relax away a team building workday without learning anything new about the company or about each other. So again, I ask again: What is your purpose?

6 Purposes That Make Sense

Every company faces challenges when it comes to team building activities for work. You want a cohesive team but you know their will be bumps in the road. When should you ask for outside help? Don’t wait until the hinges are coming off the door! Look at hiring an experienced team building success coach to help you meet your intentions.

Purpose #1: Eliminate distractions among the team.

Do individuals come to team meetings late, looking at their smartphones or engaged in personal conversations with each other? There are many ways to handle this issue – including making your meetings shorter and more interactive . However, you need to face the facts that your meetings are probably too long, too boring or too focused on you.

 Purpose #2: Team members need to know each other better.

Whether your team is spread out throughout the US or they work on different floors, it is imperative that they get to know each other better. Trust building activities are very important and should be introduced throughout your team building day.

Are your deadlines always being missed due to inadequate communication methods? Everyone communicates most effectively via different methods: face-to-face, telephone, email, text and social all are communication methods. If this is your problem, have your facilitator focus most of your team building time on ways to communicate more effectively.

Purpose #4: Teammates need to work better together.

Perhaps your team has friction, conflict or members that generally don’t like each other. While it is okay to dislike your co-workers, it is not okay to disrespect them. Finding a way to get along and get the work done is vital and needs to be the focus of these team building activities for work.

Purpose #5: Your team must to be open to change.

Change is hard – and when considering change you need to analyze how open you are to it. Change will always be occurring whether it is a reswizzle of employee responsibilities, merger of two organizations or introduction into technology that will help you do your job better. If you anticipate a lot of change this year, work on this initiative for your team building day.

Purpose #6: Team morale needs a boost.

Office drama abounds and your team is not really energized or excited about work any longer. The negativity, backstabbing and throwing people under the bus abounds. You shake your head not knowing how your team got here. Having team building activities for work that will focus on employee morale problems is key.
